A good alternative instead of using a hoof trimming disc to prepare the sole is a flap disc. These abrasive discs are used primarily in the engineering sector, are available at most hardware stores and are cheap to buy. Use a 40 grit disc for best results

This is the disc I prefer to use.
It is less aggressive than other discs but still gets the job done pretty quickly and so it is in my opinion a good disc for beginners.
Also it is safer to use because the blades do not extend past the outside edge of the aluminum body.
Its really durable and handles the knocks well.
The titanium blades are double sided so can be turned over and you can just buy replacement blades.

This cow had classic white line disease that involved the coronet. We've all seen these before and it can be quite difficult to expose the underlying pathology using a hoof knife. The photo shows the detail that can be achieved using a grinder. Next step was a HH. Happy days all round!
